Low-pressure sewer systems are ones in which a grinder or effluent pump moves residential sewage through relatively small diameter pipes (1-1/2" to 4"). A low-pressure system discharges waste streams into a major lift station or directly to treatment. Low-pressure sewer projects are used in areas thatrequire central sewers(prohibit on-site treatment) where it not possible or not feasible to install a gravity-flow system. These areas include rocky ground, near lakes, hilly areas and simply great didtances from metropolitan systems. Gravity sewer designs use larger diameter (4” and greater) pipestoallow sewage to flow to a major lift station or directly to treatment.
